It's a pretty game that's really got the vibe down, and if you have a fair bit of patience, you might end up being one of the people that leaves it a glowing review. But for me, it is just painfully slow going. I guess what it needs is "polish"?
The opening sequence is far too much running back and forth. It could teach you the basics in probably two minutes, but it takes fifteen because each thing you need for the next bit is on one side of the island and where you need to take it is on the other. When you finally hop in your boat to get off what I though must be "Tutorial Island" you are almost immediately sent straight back - just to craft one item! To bring it back again. Probably a five minute job that should have been a ten second job in your inventory. I say 'probably' because this is the part that I ran out of patience waiting for the game to pick up speed.
From the sounds of other reviews, the game is just more and more of this - Fetch Quest the Game, or so I've read. It's a nicely realised world with exquisite art and cutscenes, but the actual game of it is far to laborious for me, I'm afraid.
I finally got around to playing Summer in Mara after getting it in the Bundle for Ukraine. I gave it a 4.5/5 star review and feel it's an incredibly important game that is also pretty fun to play - if played right! Full review here: https://backloggd.com/u/astarrgames/review/698950/
For some reason the game does not accept my controller (old Logitech F310) . I tried the workaround with Steam that helped others below but it will not work for me. Can I report the bug somewhere?
I'm not one for sim games where there's no action or fighting, but Summer in Mara is the epitome of exceptions. I haven't finished it as of yet, but I'm hoping that the end doesn't come soon.
It's an adorable game with such a mix of characters that it's almost impossible to pinpoint a favourite. It's landscapes and graphics are gorgeous and I can not get enough.
How I describe it to people is that it takes the sailing mechanic of Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and mixes it with Animal Crossing.
There are 3 different kind of game in Summer in Mara:
1. Manage your island (this is awesome, lot of things to do in a day, lot's to build, you can decide what you want to upgrade to make your life easier for the most part (of course there are some items that you need to build)).
2. Discover the world as an explorer with your boat (this is the best part. I loved every island of Mara).
3. Fetch quests with awesome characters (this is the weak spot of Summer in Mara... you do meet a lot of great characters and that's good, but they also only ask you to go to do things for them (collect stuff for the most part)).
I still think this game deserve 9/10, the awesome music and artstyle, the really great animated shorts, every good part of this game deserve a 10 so the bad part is really a minor thing (as it also push you to explore more and the game does reward you for exploring).
I'm glad I played it and I will suggest this to all my friends.
I really needed something like this in my life right now. I tried playing Windbound recently, and liked the atmosphere and crafting, but wasn't too keen on the combat. Summer in Mara scratches that tropical island adventure itch but in a gorgeous, relaxing setting. This is my current go-to for a stressful day relief game.
Hi, I have this on itch from the Ukraine bundle but it heats up my computer something fierce. Is there anyway to get a discount on the switch version or is that ported by another company?
The game is so lovely and I really didn't expect this much content. The artworks are just the cutest and I love all the little details like the world changing tiny bits and also Maras avatar changing when you switch outfits!
Unfortunately I am stuck and cannot finish it because I used the dentures in a quest and cannot give them to Pilly now. I read in a forum that this was fixed a while back but I just got the game from the Ukraine bundle and still have the bug (or let's say ability to screw myself over).
I had a similar problem that I found one denture from the sea and also received another denture while both relevant quests are open. I thought Pilly would took only one of them but she took both. It seems that a denture can be no longer found from the sea at this point.
I started playing and the game looks promising, but so far I'm completely stuck because of what appears to be a stupidity: I have to cut down a tree, and for that I have to select the axe. If I understood correctly, I have to use the mouse wheel for that. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, Windows will never allow me to use the wheel. The wheel works fine on Linux, but Summer in Mara doesn't (even with wine). Isn't there some keybinding that I missed ?
Hey, I don't know why the DRM-free version of the game doesn't recognize my controller, when I try to press A, nothing happens, what is going on? what should I do??
Just read that this gives also steam key. So it's just for people who buy it normally, no in ukraine pack. Nevermind, just hope, that here will be game up to date
In the Ukraine-Bundle it was said, that there are no steam keys. You can download and play via itch.io and I am sure it is the latest version and updates won't be neglected. Have fun! :3
I was about to buy this game (for once this is something I would get on itch and actually pay money for it not just giveaways), since this is actually a game I could like. But since this only give you a steam key I will not.
Not sure if this game use any kind of drm on steam (there are a few drm-free games on steam) but I prefer to get an installer instead of using a client for the download even if the game itself is drm-free on steam.
This looks really cool! Kinda disappointing that you apparently can't get the game directly from itch.io, though. Like if people are only getting the Steam key + the artbook, not a copy of the game + the Steam key and artbook, then at that point it just seems easier to cut out the middleman and get the game on Steam in the first place.
wait why is the game not on itch?? this looks super interesting, and im down to buy it on steam, but it seems a bit misleading to have screenshots of the game here??? like put up some screens of the book so we know what were getting here.
Oh man, I instantly purchased here because I wanted a DRM-free version of this beautiful game and didn't notice that the download isn't even the game itself but only an artbook. The description "A downloadable game" and "Get a Steam key and the official artbook with your purchase!" seem to imply that I get a Steam key in addition to the game download here on itch.io (quite some developers do it that way). The Steam version itself seems to be ridden with SteamworksDRM (it forces me to use the client to run). I would recommend to make it very clear that purchasers won't get the game itself here on itch.io. The way it's written now can easily lead to misunderstandings.
Sorry for the inconvenience, we'll rewrite the description in order to be more clear about this. If we can refund your payment or do something else for you, please, write to info@chibig.com and we'll take care of it. Thanks!
Nice to see the responsiveness and accommodation, but I'd suggest to also consider releasing a DRM-free version here. I, for one, am really interested in this game, but any price is too expensive for a DRM-crippled game for me. ("Defective by design")
Edit: I just realised the game is available on GOG.com – thank you! :)

I had some frustrations, which I shared in a live review that could have been a bug (quest objectives were not showing location on the map), but surprisingly finished the quest and continued on with the game: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1751106670?collection=uxQ_ZlVXjhZYpA&t=00h0m0sVery adorable and it was very calming and relaxing to play!

It's fun, it's cute and I don't want it to end.
I finished this amazing game today.
I loved it... for the most part.

I'm trying to play with my wireless xbox one controller and I'm stuck on the title screen. I'm press a and nothing is happening.
Hope to play it soon!
try adding it as a non-steam game and launch it from steam to use steam input.
It worked! Thanks so much!

You can press 1 to switch between tools!
It works, thanks :-D

Just a heads up, it won't allow us to download the game. :c I saw I forums you were gonna upload, may wanna hit up support and see what's wrong.
I really cannot wait to play this game!
What are you having trouble with? I was able to download and launch the game just fine!
It's all good now,
The coziest game <3 I want to paint it

ok
Actually thank you for the reply. Right now this is not v true anymore and this is also part of the Ukraine bundle. That's awesome. I got it.
I will gift this game again in the future to also support the developers (I agree that right now it's best to support Ukraine)
this didnt age well lol
Why? I still think this is an amazing game. I still think Ukraine should be supported. Of course the bundle ended.
